Bear Mugs!

Hello all! I thought I would take this opportunity to share what I have been doing for the last few weeks, since I have reported no Fredness. So, here are poor photos of my new stuff! It is very rad.

So, I’m interjecting here because I just discovered the lack of flashing in most of my pictures. The photo above does a scrumptious job of showing what the other side of my new cups usually looks like. You see, these little beasties are all porcelain, English Porcelain from Laguna to be exact, with the tasty bear inlay made from stained slip that is also English Porcelain. And the inside is the always beautiful (this is where angels start singing) Howell’s Amber Celadon… I <3 that shit. I also appreciate that one of my buddies pappy made it, how rad. Oh, but there is more, for I spray a flashing slip that Kirk Lyttle gave me. It’s a beautifully simple recipe, and when sprayed on a section of porcelain it allows the flames to make it a toasty orange, or if the fire doesn’t care it just stays a dryish white. This effect changes the surface from glossy to matte to orange to scraggly bear sexyness and back to where it started. Now, continue to drool as I show you my last worthwhile set of bear cupz. Note that they are stackable to make a big bear, and are far less terrible than the earlier stacked mugs. Also they are filled with Xingu… Mmmmm.

Wow, that was a lot of sexy pottery. As some of you may know, tomorrow and Sunday are the two days of glory for Spring Street and Winter Street‘s annual studio sales! It’s something like 5-9 on October 1st and earlier than that on the 2nd(1-5? Whatever, go to the link, it’s there). If you like art and are around Houston you should be there. And its also a great time to check out these new bear mugs in person, there are not many of them left because I finally made something that people want to buy, but more are coming! So tomorrow would be a great opportunity to come check out all that I have and discuss the glory that is to come from the next round(which will have some red stoneware too, OMG!).

Really, I just need someone to come and make me feel good about my work, buy some of it, possibly give me a hug if Houston hates my pots… :,(

Thanks everybody!
Charlez

P.s. For those that care about Fred(don’t get excited, it’s the same link as earlier, I just wanted more attention), John and I got him running two weeks ago. But then he died again… Luckily it wasn’t my amazingly well assembled engine, but my transfer case! Which will now get replaced! By someone else, because I don’t want to! Anyone wanting to give donations to the Sea Bear’s transfer case for Fred fund should feel free to send me an email or phone message, or whatever. I take credit cards… Lol, I’m kidding! …unless you want to buy me a new transfer case…

P.p.s. “A beaver was actually a large rodent. It loved water, so it built dams. It looked like this.”

The quote and image are stolen from Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions. It is the greatest book of all time. And, finally, that is all.

No, wait… The cup with the beaver is for me, I’m not trying to make money off of someone else’s stuff, I just like it, so you should see it. That is really the end.

  1. So this is my first time on your blog since I checked out blogs about pottery since my last visitor found me because of the list, so I had to check it out too! Your title grabbed me lol I like bears and heck mugs are awesome too! I love these mugs esp since they can stack! I do some pottery while I’m able to at my college and I love it! I would deff say make some more of these bear mugs! If they don’t sell then heck I’ll trade a mug for a mug :P Hope today was a good studio sale and good luck for tomorrow!

    • Hello! I had a scrumptious day today for sales! I’m glad you like e bear mugs too, I always feel nervous about new stuff, it’s good to have positive reinforcement! It’s wonderful how many people get to play with clay, and I’m glad you love it, just keep at it! It’s so sad when people fall in love with clay and go decades without touching it… Don’t do that.

Anyway, keep potting, it’s the best hobby to have!

  2. Good to hear sales went good. I was at a festival yesterday and it was ok, the weather was sooo cold! ha I hate cold! I think the weather kept some people home compared to last year but thats ok. Don’t be nervous of new stuff, there is always someone out there to like it. I try new stuff all the time to find my style. I would love to have my own studio one day down the road, I just know it takes molla to get there! It is very sad when some people are so good at playing in clay yet they never touch it again. There is no way I can do that. I went the whole summer without it and I swear I had withdraws!
Keep exploring new ideas and see where it takes you, it will open up a lot if you just step a little out of your comfort zone! I am going to have your post emailed to me so I can’t wait to see whats up next! :)
